Customer Success Story - MeatMasterMeatMaster, Inc. is an independent, privately owned, meat processing company. Since the 1920's, their line has grown to more than 150 MeatMaster branded products. MeatMaster, Inc. employs around 300 full time employees. Sales are generated through 50 sales representatives located primarily across their home state. However, they also sell in surrounding states. From a 2,000 plus customer base, between 200 and 250 orders are called in daily to their meat processing plant at the main plant. Most of these orders are shipped the same day they are taken. Picking, loading and invoicing occur in the evening. MeatMaster Co., Inc. produces and ships between 800,000 and 1,000,000 pounds of finished products per week, which generates more than 4,100 invoices and credits each month. In order to handle their volume more efficiently, MeatMaster began downsizing, in 1992, from their mainframe to their new RS6000/50 "Unix box" with 11 terminals, 8 PC terminal emulators and 9 printers. They migrated from the mainframe to the new system in phases. Payroll was the first application to be converted. Then came General Ledger, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable and, most recently, Inventory/Sales. MeatMaster states that The NEW system's import facility was indispensable during the conversion process for transferring data from the mainframe to the RS-6000. "The one thing I was real excited about," says the Controller for MeatMaster Co., Inc., "was that we have been able to reduce our deductions 20% by being able to review the prices of our finished goods before they are shipped out that night. With our old system we got a price variance report the day after the product was shipped. With the New System, we have up-to-the-minute reporting. At 5:00 p.m., after all orders are in for the day, we run a custom report we made using the report generator that shows all price variances from the price list. We feel the NEW system's reporting adds security to our pricing. We don't have sales people in the field cutting special deals that have not been pre-approved. This has been a real big help." The Controller likes the NEW system's built in security features (each person only sees selected menu choices), and is also a fan of The NEW system's Notes. He uses Notes to attach messages to individuals on the payroll or to attach notes to vendors. "Occasionally, we have certain orders that have real specific instructions. Here we use notes frequently to help us prevent errors," says the Controller. "The most important benefit the the NEW System has given us is its reporting and inquiry capabilities. Our users can find the information they need themselves. We are now able to concentrate on training our users and making things easier for them. Most of the modifications we've done haven't been because they were required to use the NEW System, but because we wanted to prevent mistakes," reports a MeatMaster programmer. MeatMaster's Data Processing Manager adds, "We have found we have considerably fewer errors and our users can often recover from their own mistakes because they now understand more about what's going on, thanks to the NEW System's standardization."
